Ten Best Rock Debuts of the '60s
This month I'm spotlighting the greatest rock debut albums of the sixties. With a few exceptions, I've chosen the premier efforts from musicians largely unknown before their first release. Each LP was highly influential, consistently strong and not dominated by one or two hits.
2021 Music Preview
As of this writing, with the lockdown still in full force and vaccine distribution in its early stages, let's take our optimism any way we can get it. Which is to say that there's a lot of great music on tap for 2021, and confidence is high that there will be ticket sales in 2021 for future live shows that come off without a hitch. Also, Record Store Day 2021 is already confirmed for June 12, so it's never too early to mark your calendar for that Saturday!
Top 25 Records of 2020
I can't recall a year in which there was such an amazing amount of quality music released. Picking ten favorites was challenging and would've omitted many that I enjoyed. To help make sure you didn't miss anything--and unless you're currently homeschooling your kids, you probably have plenty of bandwidth to explore new music--here are my favorite LPs of 2020.
Talking Heads '20: How To Buy
Quiz time: what band that was hugely successful in the seventies and eighties has turned down mega-dollars to reunite since? Here's a clue: the band members haven't always gotten along well with each other. Another clue: the lead singer has toured regularly since the band's break-up and his set lists continue to include some of the band's biggest hits. If you guessed Led Zeppelin, you're right, but all of the above also applies to the Talking Heads, who came out of the Rhode Island School of Design in 1975 and parlayed a regular spot at New York's famed CBGB's into New Wave fame.
Neil Young's Buried Treasures, Part 2
One of my favorite albums of 2020 so far was actually recorded in 1974: Neil Young's Homegrown, which features seven previously-unreleased tracks and musical accompaniment from Emmylou Harris, Levon Helm, and Robbie Robertson. In October of 2018, I some of Neil's buried treasures. In honor of Homegrown, here are four more great, often overlooked albums from Young.
