Record Store Day April 2022 Releases
Here it comes again! Record Store Day is on Saturday, April 23. As usual we’ll be open early with coffee for the diehard music lovers in line early to get this year’s coveted exclusive and rare releases. Please note that because of supply chain issues and bottlenecks (thank you, Adele), this year’s collection of 325+ titles includes a handful that will be out as part of a second drop on Saturday, June 18.
As always there are no shortage of tantalizing albums to pick from. No matter what kind of music you love, there’s something for you. Please note that like in the past couple of years, dates are highly fluid and we cannot guarantee stock. If you’re looking for something in particular, you can see the full list here. For the most up-to-date information, please check with us in the days leading up to RSD to make sure we’ll have what you want in stock when we open that day.
Here, in alphabetical order, are the fifteen Record Store Day releases I’m most excited about, followed by highlights from the Heavy Metal, Jazz, Picture Disc, Singles and Soundtrack categories. David Bowie — Toy EP
Bowie lovers rejoiced earlier this year with the first-ever release of his shelved Toy album from 2000. This 10-inch EP features six tracks of demos and live recordings from that era. Bowie fans should also grab the Brilliant Adventure LP, another RSD exclusive from the Thin White Duke.
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds — Live Seeds
This double-album from 1993 is seeing its first vinyl release.
Karen Dalton — Shuckin’ Sugar
Here’s one with a local angle: newly uncovered recordings of folk legend Karen Dalton from The Attic Bar in Boulder in 1963, on transparent vinyl.
The Doors — L.A. Woman
Four albums of outtakes from the The Doors’ last recording sessions, now on vinyl and taken from the recent 50th anniversary CD box set.
Grateful Dead — Live at Wembley Empire Pool, London 4/8/72
Our biggest seller for 2021’s RSD was a 5LP box of the Grateful Dead’s legendary May 1972 show in Paris, part of the tour that culminated in their seminal Europe ’72 collection. This companion box, also 5LPs, is from the second night of the run in London in April 1972. For those keeping score, there are seven songs not played in Paris, most notably lengthy versions of “Dark Star” and “Caution,” two pillars of psychedelic-era Dead.
Nick Lowe — Wireless World
Thanks to 1979’s huge hit “Cruel to Be Kind,” Labour of Lust was Nick Lowe’s biggest seller in the U.S., but its predecessor still stands as his best work. Released under two titles (Pure Pop for Now People here, Jesus of Cool everywhere else) and featuring separate track listings, this is the first time all of the songs are being combined onto a single vinyl edition.
Joni Mitchell — Blue Highlights
Mitchell recently reissued a box set of studio, live and demo recordings from the peak of her folk era. This album extracts the material from that box specific to Blue, widely considered to be her finest work and ranked third on Rolling Stone’s 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Willie Nelson — Live at the Texas Opry House 1974
Vintage Willie on his home turf, released on vinyl for the first time as a two-record set.
The Pixies — Live at Coachella 2004
The Pixies kicked off their triumphant 2004 reunion tour with this show at Coachella, opening for headliner Radiohead. This double-record set is its first release.
The Ramones — The Sire Albums (1981-1989)
A must have for punk fans. This 7LP set features all six albums The Ramones made for Sire Records, plus a seventh of previously-unreleased rarities. These are the first reissues since the original release for all six albums.
Red Hot Chili Peppers — Unlimited Love
Newly reunited with guitarist John Frusciante–on his third tour of duty with the band dating back to 1988–the Peppers are releasing a special RSD edition of their upcoming twelfth studio effort.
Lou Reed — I’m So Free: The 1971 RCA Demos
Previously unheard, these demos are Lou Reed’s first post-Velvet Underground recordings.
The Replacements — Unsuitable for Airplay: The Lost KFAI Concert
Long before they became indie heroes, the ‘Mats played this high-energy January 1981 show to a small club and Twin Cities radio audience. Also out on RSD for Replacements lovers: Bob Stinson’s final effort with his group Bleeding Hearts, Riches & Rags, reissued with liner notes from band biographer Bob Mehr.
